If you or someone you know is interested in a career in Quantity Surveying, we’ve put together our top tips for getting started.
Do Your Research
It is important to do your research before embarking on any career journey. There are lots of resources available via industry body RICs. You might also consider talking with friends and family or getting advice from your school or college career adviser.
Get Work Experience
You can also approach organisations for work experience or take a casual job on a construction site to give you an idea of the various roles available and how different people work together on site.
Consider Your Career Routes
Once you’ve decided that a career in quantity surveying is for you, you want to decide your next step. There are no specific requirements to begin your QS training, although many have A level or Higher qualifications and choose to undertake a University degree.
Another approach is to a BTEC or HND/HNC at college, which require you to have Nat 4/5 qualifications or GCSEs. You can then progress to degree or Charter level. Our experience has shown that college courses often focus on the more practical measurement and technical skills which the industry is lacking, so could improve your employment prospects.
Both the BTEC and HNC/HND and degree courses can be undertaken as a Modern Apprenticeship, usually involving four days at work and one day at college or university, allowing you to earn money and gain experience as you work towards your qualification.
