Key People
Scott Smyth
Founder & Group CEO, Global
Scott is a Chartered Quantity Surveyor with over 30 years of experience and is the Founder and Group CEO of Soben. Scott spent the first ten years of his career in private practice with a local authority before undertaking commercial management roles with main contractors. He experienced first-hand the lack of specific contractor-focused expertise and established Soben to fill this gap. Scott devised the approach, values, and service standards upon which Soben was founded and continues to this day.
Andrew Gallacher
Managing Director – Specialist Services, EMEA
Andrew has over 20 years of front-end contracting and consulting experience across numerous sectors including retail, leisure, commercial, residential, defence, data centres, renewable energy, and utilities. Andrew is a results-focussed leader with a high level of knowledge over a range of construction contracts. With a keen eye for detail, Andrew works tirelessly to ensure that clients are properly rewarded for the work they do.
Derek McFarlane
Managing Director – Soben Consultancy, UK & Europe
Derek is a Chartered Quantity Surveyor with over 30 years industry experience. Derek has an excellent understanding of the needs of the various parties to a construction project, having worked in private practice for sub-contractors and with local, national, and global main contractors. Prior to joining Soben, Derek was Commercial Director for a global main contractor responsible for a business unit with a £200m+ turnover.
Robert McQueen
Project Director – Building & Places, UK & Europe
Robert has been a Quantity Surveyor for almost 20 years starting his career with Mackenzie Partnership which later became Davis Langdon and then AECOM. He then spent time working in Indonesia before returning to the UK where he worked for Faithful and Gould. Before joining Soben in early 2022, Robert was with Robinson Low Francis working as a Project Director for a number of years. Robert has worked in a variety of sectors but has most recently worked in the commercial office sector.
Ian Tucker
Director – Pre-Contract Services, EMEA
Ian joined Soben in early 2016 as a Senior Quantity Surveyor and has progressed in recent years to become Director of Pre-Contract Services for the EMEA region. Before joining Soben, Ian held different quantity surveying roles at an M&E support company. Ian has utilised his professional skills and experience to play a pivotal role in the recent growth and success of Soben in the UK and has worked closely with many leading tier one main contractors.
James Tucker
Director – Transport & Infrastructure, EMEA
James has over 35 years cost, contract, risk, and stakeholder management experience in the construction industry, specifically the infrastructure sector. Qualified to Master’s level (MBA) and a Fellow of both the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Building, James has mentored many students to Chartered status (CIOB & RICS). James promotes a team-working ethic and ensures that a ‘can do’ attitude is encouraged when working with others.
