Meet David Lymburn, Associate Director at Soben who has been with the company for 7.5 years. Here’s his story all about his time at Soben past, present and future.
The Past
My journey with Soben began during my second year at Glasgow Caledonian University, where I was pursuing a degree in Quantity Surveying. I connected with a Soben employee at the time on LinkedIn, who later interviewed me with Scott Smyth. Subsequently, I joined as an intern for six months. At that time, Soben was relatively small-scale with only a few team members handling various projects. Nevertheless, the experience was invaluable, and upon completing my degree, I gladly accepted a full-time job offer, a decision I have never regretted.
Witnessing Scott’s ambition was inspiring, and I could not have anticipated the significant growth of the company. As the business expanded, Andrew and Ian mentored me while setting up the team for the delivery of Bills of Quantities, leading to exposure to larger projects.
After some time within the Specialist Services division, I transitioned into the Consultancy side of the business. The learning curve was streamlined by working closely with Derek McFarlane & Robert McQueen, who have been instrumental in my development over the last few years.
The Present
Among the many triumphs and challenges, one standout project was working on the £1.5billion+ Old Oak Common Station. Being part of such a significant project provided immense exposure to the complexities of building London’s soon-to-be largest station.
Recently, I passed the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) from RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) after two years of structured training. I now mentor others going through the APC process, sharing knowledge and experience to support their growth.
The Future
Starting as an intern at just 19 years old, I was eager to gain hands-on experience and surround myself with the right people and expertise. Looking ahead, I envision furthering my professional growth with Soben. I see a future with more complex global projects, striving for excellence while upholding our brand values for world-class service.
To my younger self and others, I advise embracing every opportunity with a growth mindset and a willingness to continuously challenge yourself. Embrace change and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
