Accelerating Action: Celebrating the Women of Soben
International Women’s Day is not just a celebration – it’s a call to action. This year’s theme “Accelerate Action” reminds us that progress toward gender equality doesn’t happen by chance; it happens when we actively challenge, uplift and create opportunities for the next generation of women in the industry.
At Soben, we recognise the incredible contributions of the women in our company, and to celebrate, we asked them to share their insights on career milestones, challenges, and what International Women’s Day means to them.
1 | Have you ever experienced imposter syndrome? How do you push through it?
I experienced imposter syndrome frequently in the early stages of my career – actually until quite recently. That feeling that at any moment, someone will "find you out". But I'm not the type to let those moments of self-doubt get in the way, so I just got on with things. Gaining more experience helped me build confidence, but also realising that literally everyone else is making it up as they go along as well! Everyone's career is a unique journey and you're exactly where you need to be today. So far so good - nobody has pointed at me and shouted "you're an imposter" … yet.
I experience imposter syndrome almost daily. I think this mainly comes from the fact that I am still training as a QS. I think I tend to "hide" under the blanket of a trainee/an assistant title, so when it comes to doing actual live projects I sometimes feel as though I'm not ready or don't have enough experience yet - even though I know I am capable, I can get overwhelmed with the feeling that I'm not. I have spoken with my mentor/line manager numerous times before about this and with encouragement that I can do it, I go do it, and what do you know? I am capable. I often finish a job, take a step back and think, what was I panicking about? For me, talking about it definitely helps, and I'm lucky that I have a line manager and a mentor that I feel comfortable enough to chat to about it.
Imposter syndrome is a habit our generation struggles with, but overcoming it takes patience and persistence. We measure success through self-doubt, forgetting to pause, wonder, and dream.
I’ve worked to surround myself with people smarter than me; at times feeling unprepared; but they’ve shared their wisdom. Imposter syndrome often stems from realizing how much we don’t know. The more we learn, the more aware we become of what we have yet to master.
But that’s okay. What you know now is enough. Never underestimate your value. Share your knowledge; people need people to grow.

2 | What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
I feel it is a day to celebrate women and recognise our achievements. To celebrate the incredible progress that has been made, but I feel it is also important to acknowledge the ongoing struggles for equality, equity, and representation for women across the world. It’s a time to appreciate the everyday contributions of women – no matter how big or how small!
For me, International Women’s Day is about recognition, empowerment, and action. As a female leader in the construction industry, it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come in breaking barriers, but also how much work is still needed to create true equity. It’s about inspiring the next generation, challenging industry norms, and ensuring that talent—not gender—defines success.

3 | What’s a piece of advice from a woman in your life that you’ll never forget?
I was told to “lift as you climb”, there’s nothing more powerful than women who support each other. With more obstacles in front of us, we’re stronger together. So, if someone wants to learn from you, teach and if you want to learn from someone, ask
A piece of advice from a woman in my life that I’ll never forget is to always believe in myself and never let being a woman be a limitation. No matter where you are or what obstacles come your way, always remember that you have the strength to keep going, to learn, to grow, and to achieve your goals. Believe in yourself, embrace challenges as opportunities, and never let anything hold you back from becoming the best version of yourself.
This advice has shaped my mindset—no matter the challenges I face, whether cultural adaptation or societal barriers, I strive to keep moving forward. Success comes from perseverance, self-belief, and the determination to break through any limitations.
Never be so polite that you forget your power.

4 | What do you think companies can do to better support women in the workplace?
Companies can better support women by fostering a balanced and inclusive work environment. In many cultures, women juggle demanding careers with significant family responsibilities, making effective workload planning and resource management crucial. Providing structured team support, such as junior staff for routine tasks, can help alleviate pressure on senior professionals.
Safety and well-being are also key concerns, especially for those working late hours. Encouraging structured work hours, safe commuting options, and well-being initiatives can create a healthier workplace. Additionally, flexible work arrangements, mentorship programs, and leadership pathways that recognize family commitments can ensure career growth remains accessible.
By prioritizing these initiatives, companies can enhance retention, well-being, and overall engagement for women in the workplace
5 | If you could meet any woman in history, who would it be and why?
Emmeline Pankhurst and Emily Wilding Davison – at school everything we studied in history seemed to focus on men, with the exception of The Suffragettes and these two women. They dedicated their lives to improving women’s rights – in particular the right to vote. In a time when there’s not always great options on the ballot paper, I will always make sure I cast a vote because of these two ladies!
6 | What’s a song, book, or movie that makes you feel empowered?
A book which is empowering is “the Last Witch of Scotland” by Philip Morris. It is loosely based upon the last witch trail of in Scotland, the story focuses on a mother and daughter who are shunned by the local community and how they overcome this. No spoilers! It is empowering for me as it highlights even in times of adversity and when odds are against women we can be strong, powerful and over come these odds. Whilst allowing time for our human emotions such as sadness, love and grief.
