Soben is celebrating the delivery of a major new data centre development in Berlin, Germany, for Vantage Data Centers.

The two-storey facility at Vantage Data Center’s Berlin II campus in Mittenwalde offers 16MW of IT capacity to hyperscalers and large cloud providers. It is the first phase of a wider campus development. When complete the site will include two facilities totalling 32MW and 260,000 square feet (24,000 square meters) and a HV substation to supply the campus electrical infrastructure.

Accelerated delivery

The Soben team provided full post-contract services, including engineering project management, cost management and document control, at Vantage’s campus in Berlin. Setting a new standard for data centre development, they worked to an ambitious, accelerated timeline, taking the plot from brownfield to completion.

Working through challenging post-pandemic conditions, Soben successfully navigated remote working restrictions and unprecedented supply chain issues, employing their project management expertise, technical engineering knowledge and creative problem solving to get the job done.

Multi-tenant site

With different tenants due to occupy the building upon completion, the team was faced with a set of complex engineering and project management challenges, managing various sets of different requirements for the commissioning and handover of the site.

“The Berlin 21 project is a huge success” said Sharaz Javed, Project Lead/OFCI Manager, Soben “thanks to the expertise and commitment of Soben’s team we managed a complex set of engineering requirements, coordinated and commissioned multi-tenanted requisites, and delivered an aggressive schedule to successful completion.”

Growth in Germany

Berlin II is part of Soben’s investment in Germany, where the business has invested in its team of commercially experienced data centre experts to serve the expanding German data centre market – the largest in Europe, and second-largest globally.

“Our new developments in Frankfurt and Berlin are testaments to our significant growth throughout EMEA in less than 24 months in the market,” said Antoine Boniface, president, Vantage EMEA. “Our portfolio now consists of nine campuses throughout EMEA. Demand from our customers continues to increase in these major economic centers, and our ability to scale quickly ensures our sustainable, state-of-the-art facilities will be ready to meet our customers’ business needs.”

Following successful delivery of Berlin 21, the Soben team will now continue working with Vantage Data Centers to deliver further phases of the development.

“We have been very pleased to work with Soben on BER21,” said Colm Fagan, Director of Construction, Vantage EMEA. “They have provided a great strategic value to the project, and we would like to thank them for bringing their expertise to that campus.”

About Soben

Soben offers something different – a combination of the best consultancy practices, with hands-on commercial experience delivering major construction projects. Founder Scott Smyth started in private practice, before moving to work for contractors as a commercial manager. Scott found that he struggled to identify organisations to support him that understood the commercial reality of being a major contractor working on high-risk projects with low-profit margins. As a result, Scott founded Soben. Since 2011, we’ve been supporting some of the world’s leading organisations, increasing certainty for their construction investments through cost, project, programme, and risk management consultancy – proudly shaping the future with integrity.

Soben’s global data centre specialists provide innovative construction consultancy solutions to the world’s leading data centre providers and tenants. To date Soben has delivered $18.2 billion and 1,869MW of projects across three continents.
