A CONTRACT to support the main contractor building the new headquarters for Google in London has been secured by Soben.

The company will prepare Bills of Quantities for Lendlease Construction Europe, assisting them and enabling them to conduct negotiations for the construction of the £1 billion-plus project at King’s Cross.

Soben will have a 12-week involvement over a six-month period, which will see them work on a scope of service involving sub-structure, concrete works, frames, roof, cladding and internal fit-out.

Managing Director Scott Smyth said: “This is an enormous coup for us. We have built up a great track record and we are now trusted on projects of great complexity and scale.

“To be working alongside Lendlease Construction Europe on a project of such incredible importance for one of the planet’s greatest companies is testament to our professionalism and expertise and it further underscores our commitment to providing world-class service,”

The project involves creating a vast HQ “campus” next to Google’s existing base in King’s Cross,

The centrepiece will be the construction of a 10-storey “landscraper”, which will be as long as the Shard is tall (306m, 1004ft), and have a floorspace of 650,000 sq ft (60,400 sq m).

It will be augmented by a further two buildings on the King’s Cross Estate. All three will eventually house 7,000 workers.

The new building will lie alongside King’s Cross rail station, in an area currently used for theatre shows.

Google currently has five offices in the UK – four in London (Covent Garden, two near King’s Cross and another elsewhere in London) and one in Manchester.
